My Reasons for an Evergreen Social Media Blog

February 27, 2024

In a world where social media trends flicker and fade with the speed of a scrolling feed, the quest for content that lasts seems almost impossible. Yet, here lies the story of a journey towards the holy grail of digital presence: evergreen social media content.

But is it really possible to create social media content that remains relevant over time?

What if I told you that amidst the ephemeral tweets, vanishing posts, and strict algorithms, there exists a strategy to ensure your insights stay valuable tomorrow as they are today?

This article is an exploration into why I’ve chosen a different path for my blog, trying to stay away from the how-to tactics or guides on the latest features. And instead, I’ve decided to focus on an evergreen social media blog that transcends the industry fleeting trends.

What is evergreen social media content?

At its core, evergreen social media content refers to material that retains its relevance and value over time. Unlike news articles or trending topics that quickly lose their allure, evergreen posts are designed to be timeless. They continue to attract readers, engage audiences, and drive traffic long after they’re published.

Evergreen content is the stalwart of social media strategy, transcending the fleeting nature of digital trends. This type of content isn’t tied to specific events or moments. Instead, it addresses topics that readers will always find useful or interesting.

But, why does this matter?

In a landscape where algorithms favor freshness but audiences crave substance, evergreen content strikes the perfect balance. It ensures that your social media presence isn’t just a flash in the pan but a lasting beacon for your audience. By focusing on evergreen content, you’re investing in resources that continue to pay dividends, both in visibility and engagement, long into the future.

In essence, evergreen social media content is about creating a legacy. It’s about offering value that persists amid the constant changes of the digital world.

Tactical content vs. evergreen social media content

Crafting evergreen content in the rapidly evolving world of social media is a formidable challenge. Today’s cutting-edge advice can quickly become obsolete due to the dynamic nature of platforms and user behaviors. This reality complicates the creation of content that maintains its value over time.

The demand for tactical content, driven by users’ desire for immediate updates and solutions, often overshadows the quest for evergreen material. Such content, though popular for fleeting moments, risks rapid obsolescence as social media landscapes shift.

So, why does evergreen social media content feel like finding a unicorn in this landscape? Several key factors contribute:

  1. Rapid platform evolution: Constant updates to social media platforms mean that features and strategies can quickly become outdated.
  2. Changing user behaviors: What worked yesterday might not cut it today. Our audience evolves with the world around them, shifting what they care about and how they engage.
  3. Algorithmic changes: Just like the weather, social media algorithms change frequently. These alterations to platform algorithms need continuous strategy adjustments, challenging the longevity of content.
  4. Technological advancements: New technologies like AR, VR, and AI continually change the capabilities of social media, dating content that doesn’t evolve.
  5. Specificity vs. Generality: Finding that sweet spot between being too niche and too vague is more art than science, requiring a knack for predicting what will stand the test of time.

Steering through these challenges is no small feat. It demands not just a keen eye on the present but also a visionary outlook on what holds enduring appeal. Despite the hurdles, the pursuit of evergreen social media content is more than worth it. It’s about creating something that not only survives the storm but thrives long after, engaging and enlightening your community for years to come.

My shift to evergreen content

Back in 2014, I kicked off a blog that, to my delight, skyrocketed in popularity, even snagging a finalist spot in Social Media Examiner’s annual blog awards the following year. Riding that wave, I branched out into a YouTube series, sharing insights and tips with an ever-growing audience. Life was good.

Then, a twist in my career path led me to a fantastic opportunity at AdEspresso, and gradually, my blog and video series took a backseat. It wasn’t until someone reached out, puzzled by an article’s outdated advice, that a stark realization hit me. Most of my content, except for a handful of posts, had aged like milk, not wine. This wake-up call, combined with my full-time commitments, led me to shut down the blog.

Fast forward a few years, and here I was, contemplating a digital resurrection. The idea of reviving my blog lingered in my mind, but the ghost of obsolescence haunted me. I pondered, “Is it worth it to start over, only to have my content become irrelevant again?” Yet, the allure of sharing my expertise and helping others was too strong to ignore.

The solution? A pivot to an evergreen social media blog. It seemed like a no-brainer, but executing it was another story. How could I ensure my new blog wouldn’t fall into the same trap? This question set the stage for my journey towards a more sustainable, evergreen approach to blogging—a path less traveled but infinitely more rewarding.

The solution: a strategic approach

Facing the challenge of fleeting content, here I am now aiming to steer my blog towards a strategic approach, prioritizing long-term value over short-lived tactics.

Tactics, while popular and highly sought after for their immediate applicability, are vulnerable to the rapid changes across social media platforms, legislation, and industry trends. Strategy, on the other hand, offers a durable beacon. It’s broad, adaptable, and not tied to the transient features of any single network or moment in time.

This strategic lens focuses on overarching principles that guide successful social media engagement, independent of current tools or features. It’s about laying a foundation that remains solid regardless of the digital landscape’s shifts. Such a focus not only ensures the content’s longevity but also broadens its appeal. It speaks to both the hands-on managers immersed in daily social media intricacies and the higher-level executives overseeing these digital strategies.

Furthermore, this approach extends the blog’s relevance beyond the immediate, offering insights that are applicable across different scenarios and even beyond social media itself; such as other fields of digital marketing – and even marketing in general!

In adopting this strategic perspective, the goal is to transform this blog into a timeless resource. It’s about empowering readers with knowledge that stands the test of time, ensuring they’re equipped to navigate the ever-evolving world of social media with confidence and clarity.

Incorporating tactical insights within a strategic framework

Opting for a strategic approach in blog doesn’t push tactical insights off the table; it recognizes their value from a distance. The essence of this strategy isn’t to overshadow or replace tactical content but to complement it from a broader perspective.

In situations that call for detailed tactical guidance, this blog acts as a signpost to reputable articles rather than creating new tactical content. This strategy ensures the blog remains a valuable strategic resource, acknowledging the fast-paced changes in social media without getting bogged down by them.

However, despite this strategic focus, the unpredictable nature of social media occasionally necessitates references to specific networks and features, such as Facebook advertising or short video formats such as Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. While these references carry the risk of becoming outdated due to platform changes or feature evolutions, it’s a risk inherent to the field of social media marketing. The strategic foundation of the blog mitigates this risk but can’t eliminate it entirely.

By positioning strategic insights alongside directions to current tactical advice, this blog aims to serve as a comprehensive guide. It offers readers the best of both worlds: enduring strategies complemented by up-to-date tactics found elsewhere.

Conclusion: embracing evergreen social media for sustainable impact

Embracing an evergreen, strategy-focused blog in the fast-evolving world of social media is more than a choice; it’s a beacon for lasting impact. This approach transcends the fleeting nature of tactical advice, offering insights that remain relevant, insightful, and impactful.

By prioritizing strategies that withstand the test of time and guiding readers to the latest tactical resources, my goal is to create a blog that is not just current but enduringly valuable.
